Security forces in Tonj South County have intercepted 1,688 rounds of live ammunition and arrested two suspects at the Bab-cok security checkpoint along the Wau–Tonj road.
According to a statement published on the Aweil County Official Facebook Page, the ammunition was seized during intensified surveillance operations aimed at curbing the smuggling of firearms and related materials.
The two suspects are currently in custody pending further investigation.
Tonj South County Commissioner, John Ayitiak Warwien, commended the security personnel for their vigilance, describing the interception as a significant step toward addressing insecurity in the area.
“The volume of this seizure is clear evidence that illegal firearms remain in high demand,” Commissioner Warwien said.
“These ammunitions are being procured by both civilians and criminals to fuel ongoing violence in our communities. By intercepting these supplies, we are directly weakening the capacity of such groups to carry out further attacks.”
The commissioner added that the operation forms part of broader efforts to create a secure environment that allows lawful trade and movement without fear of armed violence.
He further warned residents against engaging in the illegal arms trade, describing it as a harmful activity that only brings suffering and loss.
County authorities reiterated their commitment to protecting civilians and restoring lasting peace in Tonj South.
