Authorities in Yei River County say three people were killed about 16 kilometres from Yei town while travelling along the Yei–Maridi road.

According to a statement issued by Yei River County Commissioner Samuel Henry Malimbo, the victims were killed in two separate incidents by unidentified gunmen on Independence Day.

Commissioner Malimbo said the attacks occurred in Kirikwa, about 16 kilometres from Yei town.

He said the first victim was killed while travelling to buy cattle for business.

Two more civilians were killed in the same area around the same time in separate incidents.

The commissioner condemned the killings, describing them as unacceptable and saying such attacks undermine peace, public safety and development in Yei River County.

“We condemn the killing of innocent civilians and are committed to ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice,” Malimbo said.

He said the attackers remain unknown and that security agencies are actively investigating the incidents and pursuing those responsible.

The commissioner appealed to residents to remain calm, cooperate with security authorities and report any information that could assist the investigation.

Yei River County has continued to face insecurity marked by road ambushes, armed abductions and attacks on civilians.
