Sudan’s capital Khartoum is reportedly quiet after the United States and Saudi Arabia-brokered 24-hour humanitarian ceasefire was announced on Friday evening.

The ceasefire is the latest attempt to end intensive fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group, according to Al Jazeera news agency.

The truce took effect from 6 am on Saturday, June 10, with hopes by the mediators that a pause in fighting will facilitate the safe passage of desperately needed humanitarian aid across the country.

The ceasefire is also hoped to halt the fighting that has been raging since April 15 when a rivalry between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo erupted into open warfare.

The one-day ceasefire follows a series of violated truces between the army and the paramilitary RSF.

Reuters news agency reports that the U.S. and Saudi Arabia have continued the talks indirectly recently, and threatened to adjourn the talks if fighting continues.
