S Sudan scholars stranded in Morocco

More than 25 South Sudanese university students studying under the Moroccan government scholarships are stranded due to lack money to cater for their needs.

Under the arrangements, the parents cater for accommodation while the government of Morocco pays tuitions fees.

The students say they could not afford to pay for water and electricity bills, including transport and accommodation.

Margret Paulo, a parent to a student studying in Morocco, told Eye Radio’s Dawn show her child is suffering.

Ms Margret said she could not access the US dollars at the official rate to send to her child.

In the commercial banks, 100 US dollars is selling at about 300 pounds, but in the black market, the rate increases to about 1,600 pounds.

“I appeal to the government to avail to us dollars at the bank rate so that we can help the students,” Ms Margret said. “Their situation is bad.”

However, the director of external teaching at the Ministry of Education, Benjamin Gabriel, told Eye Radio that he was unaware of the condition of the students.

“This is a new thing to me. That scholarship actually gives them tuition fees,” Mr Gabriel stated.

“They don’t pay and some time they are given accommodation, and the Moroccan government also gives them $92 per month.”

Twenty five students who could not manage the hardship are said to have abandoned their studies.
