The Sudanese government suspended ties Tuesday with the East African regional bloc trying to mediate between the army and RSF force, according to a statement issued by Sudan’s Foreign Ministry.

This came after Sudan accused the body of violating Sudan’s sovereignty by inviting the paramilitary leader to an upcoming summit.

Sudanese Acting Foreign Minister Ali Al-Sadiq has informed the regional bloc of his country’s decision.

Minister Ali Al-Sadiq attributed the move to what it termed “violations by the IGAD” by including the situation in Sudan on the agenda of the upcoming summit.

The IGAD summit is scheduled to be held in the Ugandan capital of Kampala on Thursday.

The Sudanese Foreign Ministry also referred to the IGAD’s invitation to the commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, to attend the summit.

Minister Ali Al-Sadiq called the move by IGAD “a dangerous precedent in the history of the regional and international organizations.”

Over the weekend, Sudan officially objected to the upcoming IGAD summit in Kampala, which would discuss the situation in Sudan.

Sudan has been witnessing deadly clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF since April 15, 2023.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, more than 12,000 people have been killed, and over 7.4 million have been displaced inside and outside Sudan since the fighting broke out.

The IGAD has been intensifying pressure on the Sudanese warring parties to sign a truce agreement to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to the war-affected population.
