Police officer jailed for killing trader after robbing him of money, phones

Authorities in Yambio County of Western Equatoria State have arrested suspected police personnel for killing a businessman in the area on Tuesday.

Commissioner Mbiko Barakat says the 33-year-old sergeant James Mathew has confessed to being involved in the wrongdoing.

Mbiko also said police have recovered $621 us dollars, 259,000 South Sudanese pounds and two phones from the suspected police officer.

Barakat confirmed the incident to Eye-radio in an exclusive interview this afternoon.

“We have arrested a suspect who is called James Mathew and we have found $621 us dollars, 259, 000 South Sudanese pounds, and two phones those are the things that the police have far recovered,” Mbiko said.

“The primary investigation is that James Mathews has confessed that he accepted the wrongdoing but the investigation is ongoing because he was not alone but for him was saying he was alone,” he said.

Commissioner Mbiko is urging law enforcement agents to stick to their mandate of protecting citizens and their properties.

“I’m calling upon all the heads of security in Yambio County to take full responsibility for their forces and make sure that their forces go about the lawful activities in the county,” he said.

“I want to stand and appreciate the new director who was brought here at the County level for the good work he’s doing because there are no criminal activities that have happened here and not brought it to book,” he added.

According to Mbiko, in the last three months, six incidents have been recorded of law enforcement agents indulging in criminal activities in the area.
