SPLA leadership decries New Year’s shootings

Author : | Published: Thursday, January 1, 2015

The SPLA Spokesperson has condemned last night shooting in Juba, calling it illegal.

Colonel Philip Aguer says those who fired bullets in air last night must have been drunken soldiers.

He says it was a shame that those soldiers did not respect the instructions given by the army and army commands not to fire bullets in air.

‘‘Well it was an unfortunate excitement; the shooting into the air is not lawful. We feel as the command of the army and the police, we feel shamed because that was out of indiscipline. So hope that nobody was harmed during that celebration.” Aguer said.

Colonel Aguer said the long history of combat has traumatized many soldiers, as such; they often shoot randomly in air.

He says the military hospital lacks psychiatrists who should be helping to treat the cases.

‘‘With the background of the army that has been fighting the 21 years of war, we definitely need a lot to be done. We need social sociology to address the issue of trauma and this is where specially we lack now, and needed to be in our hospital and we need to have doctors that should be treating trauma that are trained and experts to help us in shaping the discipline of our army.” The Army Spokesperson said.

Colonel Aguer says there is need to have psychiatrists at the Military Hospital to treat those traumatized soldiers.
