South Sudan’s Minister of Mining has expressed the country’s readiness to support a new continental strategy on mineral resource governance following the ratification of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG) Charter in Abuja, Nigeria.
The charter was formally adopted during a ceremony held at the State House in Abuja, bringing together African leaders and ministers to strengthen cooperation in the management and development of the continent’s mineral resources.
The AMSG is expected to enhance policy coordination, promote value addition, and support strategic investment in the mining sector to ensure Africa’s mineral wealth contributes to job creation, infrastructure development, and broader economic transformation.
The summit, held under the theme “One Africa, One Resource Vision,” was attended by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who signed the Instrument of Ratification of the AMSG Charter and assumed the role of Chairperson of the AMSG Heads of State General Assembly.
Speaking during the ceremony, South Sudan’s Minister of Mining, Losuba Ludoru Wongo, said the country supports the continental initiative and emphasized the need for unity in managing Africa’s mineral wealth.
“The theme of this summit, one Africa, one resource vision, captures the truth that is becoming increasingly important in today’s global challenging economy. Africa’s mineral future cannot proceed through fragmentation. Divided Africa is a failed Africa,” he said.
He stressed that Africa’s resources should translate into tangible benefits for citizens.
“Our people must see tangible benefits from resource development, where our young people must find employment and must have greater economic opportunities. Our communities must gain access to schools, to better health services, to good roads, electricity and clean water,” he added.
The Minister further noted that South Sudan is committed to the continental agenda.
“South Sudan stands ready to contribute to this shared African vision. We are sure that we shall achieve that,” he said.
Other officials at the ceremony highlighted the importance of regional cooperation in ensuring that Africa maximizes the value of its natural resources through industrialization and sustainable mining practices.
The Africa Minerals Strategy Group is expected to serve as a key platform for coordination, technical cooperation, and investment mobilization across Africa’s mining sector in the coming years.
