President Salva Kiir says his government will not sign up to the International Criminal Court ICC, claiming that it seems to target African leaders only.

President Kiir said that he sits together jointly with the visiting Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta, who faces charges of crimes against humanity at the tribunal.

“Whatever has been written in Rome Statute has never been used against any of their presidents or head of the state, said President Kiir. “It seems that this thing is meant to humiliate African leaders.”

The statement comes ahead of the African Union summit which is expected to discuss the ICC which they think is threatening the sovereignty of African states.

In a discussion to be held at the AU summit today, African leaders will be reportedly seeking withdrawal from the Rome Statute unless the ICC drops its cases against three Kenyans including President Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto.

The Rome Statute obliges states parties to cooperate with the Court in the investigation and prosecution of crimes, including the arrest and surrender of suspects.

Part 9 of the Statute requires all states parties to “ensure that there are procedures available under their national law for all of the forms of cooperation which are specified under this Part.
