The spokesperson of the police has denounced harassment of women and girls because of their dressing style in Juba.

Major General Justin was answering questions from reporters on allegations that police have been harassing women and girls due to their dressing style.

This came after some women in Juba complained against the police officers, whom they said were cutting their clothes, claiming that were indecent.

The police spokesperson urged the public to report any police involved in the indecent dress crackdown in Juba.

“Our role in the police is to open a report based on the events and send the file to the court. There, the case is decided according to the evidence provided. The court convicts or acquits if the evidence is not sufficient.”

“It is not my duty or my duties as a policeman to deal with a worker who wears short clothes. These practices and violations must be reported.”

The sectors in Juba’s residential neighbourhoods made up of different members of the organized forces, have long been accused of many forms of extortion.

According to Justin, these units were established under a ministerial decision by the Minister of the Interior to combat crimes, immediately after the country descended into a deadly civil war in 2013.

“The police force was not sufficient during that period, so some individuals from the other regular force were sought.”

Gen Justin called on the public to report any harassment from unscrupulous police personnel using the emergency number 112.
