The Minister of Petroleum said an investigation has commenced to ascertain the cause of the plane crash that occurred at Unity Oilfield on Wednesday and is known to have killed 20 people in one of South Sudanese’s deadliest aviation accident.
Puot Kang Chol has confirmed that a Light Air Service plane carrying 21 people crashed shortly after takeoff from Unity Oil Field supposedly for Juba.
Mr. Kang also revealed that the crash occurred just three minutes into the flight and killed 20 of the people on board except one survivor currently nursing injuries.
According to the petroleum minister, the aircraft was carrying 19 passengers and two crew members – including 16 South Sudanese, two Chinese nationals, one Indian national, and two Ugandan crew members.
Addressing the media in Nairobi, Mr. Kang expressed “deep sorrow” over the incident and extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
“We are deeply saddened to report this unfortunate incident involving a light air service plane that tragically crashed just three minutes after takeoff from Unity Oil Fields en route to Juba,” he said.
“The aircraft was carrying 19 passengers plus two crew totaling 21 on board. This individual, you have 16 who are South Sudanese national, you have two Chinese, you have one Indian and the two crew are from Uganda.”
“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those on board during this incredibly difficult time, particularly those who have lost their loved one and those who lost life.”
“We are grateful that God has served one life by name, Engineer Maker, and we pray to Almighty that He serve his life now that we are able to communicate with him.”
Mr. Kang assured the public that authorities are working closely with local officials and emergency responders to assess the situation and provide necessary assistance.
“We are currently working closely with local authorities and my team are working very, very close with them and the emergency service to assess the situation and provide assistance to those affected.”
“We are grateful to the people of Unity State for taking it upon themselves to provide the assistance needed. An investigation into the cause of crash is underway and we are fully committed to cooperating with relevant authorities to ensure that thorough examination is conducted.”
“As we are all aware, the planes are registered and they are under civil aviation, which is under Ministry of Transport, and we are working closely with the ministry for them to conduct investigation plus all other agencies into this matter.”
The minister also acknowledged the swift response of the people of Unity State, who provided immediate assistance at the crash site.
He further assured families of the victims—both South Sudanese and foreign nationals that the government, through the Ministry of Petroleum and the Greater Operating Company (GPOC), is working to identify and support them in this difficult time, including preparations for burial.
The cause of the crash remains unknown, and further details will be provided as investigations progress.
