The United States has congratulated the people of South Sudan as the country marks the 15th anniversary of its independence on July 9.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended congratulations on behalf of the United States, reaffirming Washington’s longstanding support for the South Sudanese people.
Rubio said U.S. support for South Sudan began decades before the country’s independence in 2011, through partnerships with religious organizations, civil society groups, and grassroots movements.
“The United States’ support for the South Sudanese people began decades before independence in 2011. In partnership with religious organizations, civil society groups, and other grassroots movements, the United States has sought to promote a peaceful and prosperous future for the South Sudanese people,” the statement said.
The Secretary of State added that the United States looks forward to continuing its engagement with South Sudan as the two countries maintain bilateral relations.
South Sudan gained independence from Sudan on July 9, 2011, following a referendum in which an overwhelming majority voted for secession, making it the world’s youngest nation. This year marks the country’s 15th Independence Anniversary.
