Only peace will save economy from collapsing – Lam Akol

Author : | Published: Thursday, May 14, 2015

In order to save the economy from collapsing, the government must bring peace, the leader of the opposition SPLM-DC has said.

Dr. Lam Akol says the country is heading towards a disaster due to changes in dollar rate and increase in prices of goods.  This has led to shortage of items such as bread and fuel, particularly in the capital, Juba.

Dr. Akol urged the government to unify the exchange rate.

“There must be a quick and rapid decision to be taken to unify the exchange rates,” Dr Akol told Eye.

Meanwhile, the chairperson of Information Committee in the Assembly, Thomas Wani Kundu, says the MPs will raise a motion next week to discuss economic issues.

“We want to find out because we have seen that dollar is being sold in the black market by people whom we don’t expect to have the dollar,” Hon Wani said.

“We shall bring in the Governor of Central Bank to tell us exactly what has caused this dollar scarcity in the market.”

Traders blame the increase in prices of commodities to dollar scarcity. $100 sells at 1,100 pounds in the black market.
