The United States Ambassador to South Sudan said durable peace cannot thrive where leaders blame one another for their inaction as he calls on the transitional government to initiate a successful transition.

Michael J. Adler said that South Sudanese citizens have the right to free, fair, and peaceful elections and that, such can be achieved if peace parties are committed to full implementation of the 2018 peace deal.

Ambassador Adler stated that all leaders share a responsibility to bring the transitional period to a successful and peaceful completion.

“A culture of peace does not thrive in an environment where leaders blame political rivals for inaction yet eschew their own responsibilities,” Adler said during the International Peace Day celebration on Thursday.

As the South Sudanese people look at the year to come, they have the right to expect a free, fair, and peaceful election.”

“This can only take place if the transitional government meets its responsibility to achieve the essential peace commitments for such an election to be possible.”

Mr. Adler reiterated the long-standing commitment of the U.S. and its Troika partners to the South Sudanese people in achieving the future they deserve through democracy.

“The United States and our Troika partners have a longstanding commitment to the success of the South Sudanese people in achieving a future of peace, democracy, and prosperity.”

International Day of Peace is globally celebrated every year on September 21.

The event is marked this year under the theme: “Action for Peace: Our Ambition for Global Goals” but South Sudan however, adopted a theme: “Me and You for peace in South Sudan”.
