The woman who had been fighting for her life after being shot by her now-deceased husband in Nzara County, Western Equatoria State passed away on Friday, the commissioner has said.

The victim, Nora Jumma was shot in the head by her husband Tingba Naanzari who later took his own life at Namuku in Nzara.

Commissioner Zizi Richard said the deceased culprit fled after shooting his wife, thinking she died.

Following a police search, he was found dead in what the Police Commissioner branded a suicide.

On Sunday, Commissioner, Zizi Richard confirmed to Eye Radio that the woman has also succumbed to the gunshot wound in the head.

Richard says she died only 7 hours after being admitted at the hospital.

“His wife passed away hours after entering the hospital, at about three o’clock in the afternoon,” he said.

The genesis of the domestic violence that culminated in the couple’s tragedy has not been clearly established.

However, Commissioner Richard said the couple had a dispute to be settled at a traditional court. He blames the local chiefs for having allegedly forced them to divorce.

“I put some blames on the sultans because they rush the divorce decision before looking into the case well,” he said.

“The reason for the death of this husband and his wife is the decision of the sultans who insisted on divorcing the couple. Because of the state of the trauma experienced by the community, he shot his wife and hanged himself.”

Richard said many people are traumatized by war and called on the paramount chiefs to develop a modality to adopt restorative justice for families, rather than separating them.

“What we are supposed to do is to help these young couples, instead of giving them a reason for separate.”
