Museveni made the remarks on Saturday during the traditional Okuhingira ceremony of Kisha Isabel Byanjeru Kaboyo, daughter of State Minister for Luweero Triangle and Rwenzori Region Alice Kaboyo, in Kiruhura District.

The Chimp Report news outlet citied the President as saying excessive demands for cattle and money were turning a cultural practice meant to unite families into a financial burden.

“You, the Banyankole, are damaging the population with this thing of Okujugusa (paying bride price). Why ask for 15 cows and millions of shillings? Why are you selling your children?” Museveni said.

He said high bride price demands and expensive weddings were forcing some young couples to begin married life with debt.

Museveni also criticized lavish wedding ceremonies, urging religious leaders to encourage more affordable celebrations.

“These extravagant weddings are going to disturb people. I urge religious leaders to address this issue through their preaching,” he said.

The President said traditional marriage customs should continue to preserve culture and strengthen family ties rather than become commercial transactions.

During the event, Museveni also praised communities in Uganda’s cattle corridor for shifting towards settled dairy farming, saying the move has improved household incomes.

He urged livestock farmers to prepare for prolonged dry seasons by conserving pasture, protecting water sources, and expanding irrigation.
