Northern Bahr el Ghazal Governor Simon Ober Mawut has ordered the release of 50 inmates jailed for petty crimes at Aweil Central Prison, as a Christmas gesture.
Mawut directed the state prison service and other relevant authorities to release the inmates including juveniles, women, and the elderly.
The governor explained in a video address that the dozens of inmates were released to decongest prison facilities and curb the spread of contagious diseases.

Mr. Mawut further said his administration is developing concrete strategies and policies to ensure that the state remains secure and peaceful.
