Youth Minister Atong Kuol spoke on Eye Radio's Zone 72 on Saturday

National Minister of Youth and Sports Atong Kuol Manyang has called for a review of South Sudan’s taxation policies, saying multiple taxes are hindering the growth of youth-owned businesses.

Speaking on Eye Radio’s Zone 72 on Saturday, Atong said many young entrepreneurs feel burdened by what they perceive as double or multiple taxation imposed at different levels of government.

“There is a need for government to review all those taxes because this issue has been raised by different groups,” she said.

Drawing on her experience as a former trade and industry minister, Atong noted that businesses are often taxed by local authorities, the national government, and at border points, increasing the cost of doing business.

She urged authorities to assess existing taxes and remove unnecessary charges to create a more supportive environment for young entrepreneurs.

Atong warned that excessive taxation does not only affect business owners but also consumers, as traders often pass on the additional costs through higher prices.

“If the taxation is high, it is not only them who are affected. At the end of the day, it is the citizens who bear the cost,” she said.

The minister said easing the tax burden would help businesses expand, create jobs, and contribute more effectively to the country’s economic growth.
