The Ministry of Humanitarian Affair says it is in contact with Sudan to open their common border for humanitarian aid to enter in the country.

The supplies are expected to reach hundreds of thousands of Internally Displaced Persons in Upper Nile and Unity states.

The undersecretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Clement Taban, told Eye Radio’s Sundown Show that it is easier for the government to purchase food supplies from Sudan for the two states because they are close to the border.

“Now in Upper Nile there is peace and stability and in Unity there is peace and stability and we are discussing with our neighbor Sudan to open humanitarian corridors in Upper Nile and in Unity states,” he said.

“People are concentrated in different locations because there is still fear.”

However, eyewitnesses in Unity state say there is not peace and stability there and they are still witnessing fighting.

Mr. Taban said the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs is coordinating with aid agencies to supply areas cut off from state capitals by the conflict.

The border was closed in May 2011 after Sudan accused South Sudan of supporting rebels in Khordofan region against the Khartoum government, an allegation South Sudan denied.

After the relations worsened in 2012, leading to almost an all-out war in Heglig in April, Sudan resorted to punishing smugglers of goods with up to seven years in jail if convicted.
