Jonglei teachers demand chalk allowance

Author : | Published: Wednesday, October 22, 2014

Teachers in Jonglei State have gone on strike. They are demanding chalk and house allowances.

They threatened not to resume work until their dues are paid.

The State Minister of Education, Tut Kony Nyang, says the government will not pay other allowances except house allowance.

“What the government can do now is only pay house allowances. Other allowances, which they are talking about, are not real,” Mr Nyang said.

He says the state government is in dialogue with the teachers to convince them to resume teaching.

“We are trying now to do a diplomatic way and the way also reasonable; we are giving them time to dialogue with them.

However, he warned that his government could take actions against those who will carry on with the strike.

“If they are going to stop their teaching, then measures will be taken against them.”
