Catholic Bishop Santo Laku Pio has called on South Sudanese voters to prioritize electing women to leadership positions during the country’s upcoming general elections.

The Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Juba made the appeal in Juba on Sunday, urging the electorate—particularly women—to use their ballots to increase female representation across public office.

Bishop Laku Pio argued that South Sudan must offer women a greater opportunity to lead, stating that current leadership structures have failed to address pressing national challenges.

He also linked the ongoing social and political difficulties to mounting mental health concerns among citizens, positioning female leadership as a vital alternative.

“I address my words directly to the women: if elections are held, you must nominate and vote for women. Give your votes to women. I am launching this call because men have failed to guide the country toward peace,” Bishop Laku stated.

“Many people are suffering mental distress due to the hardships caused by men. It is time to trust women in leadership. Let us give women a chance in the elections by voting for them.”

The appeal comes as political parties and electoral bodies prepare for the polls, with women’s political representation remaining a central topic in public discourse.
