Why Japan’s army chief canceled her S Sudan visit

Author : | Published: Friday, September 16, 2016

The Japanese Defense Minister has canceled her visit to South Sudan due to an allergic reaction she developed after taking anti-malarial drugs.

Tomomi Inada had planned to come to South Sudan on Saturday to assess the situation in areas where the Japanese Forces have been deployed for U.N. peacekeeping operations.

However, the Japanese times reported that Ms Inada has given up her planned trip to the country and will return from the US to Japan today.

The report says she also took a medication to treat the allergic reaction that may weaken her immune system.

According to the defense ministry, those accompanying her took the same anti-malarial medication in order to travel to South Sudan.

The Japanese government is said to be reconsidering the expansion of assignments to the next batch of its troops to be sent to South Sudan in mid-November.

The new duties could include missions to rescue U.N. staff and others under attack.
