Health official warns of possible third wave of Covid-19

Health official has warned the country could soon experience a third wave of the coronavirus due to a sharp increase in cases I recent weeks.

This is as twenty three more new cases were confirmed on Tuesday this week.

Last week alone, the Ministry of Health recorded 120 cases across the country, among whom twenty are students.

The learners are reportedly from one school in Nimule town of Central Equatoria state.

Dr Angelo Goup, the Chief of Operations of the Emergency Operation Center on Covid-19  attributes the rise in cases to the infectious Delta variant.

He told Eye Radio, Nimule, Yambio in Western Equatoria and Pawir in Ruweng Administrative Area as well as Juba, Central Equatoria are the most affected places.

“What we are in is not a resurgence yet. But it is alarming where in some location cases have increased a little bit like Nimule, and Yambio and Ruweng Administrative area and central Equatoria,” said Dr. Angelo.

He says Delta variant is dominating all cases [of Covid-19] in South Sudan.

“The last samples we took to Uganda Virus Research Institute. All of them came positive for Delta variant.”

Dr Goup said a covid-19 response team this morning left for Nimule to assess the aftermath of the cases detected in a school.

The Ministry of Health has persistently advised the public to adhere to the Covid-19 preventive and control guidelines to minimize widespread of the virus.

These include wearing of face masks in public places, social distancing and regular hand washing with water and soap or sanitizing.
