The Council of Ministers has approved a constitutional amendment bill aimed at removing legal obstacles to South Sudan’s planned general elections in December 2026.

The approval came during the Cabinet’s regular meeting chaired by President Salva Kiir on Friday.

According to the Office of the President, the amendment is intended to align the Transitional Constitution with Article 8.4 of the Revitalized Peace Agreement, which provides for legislative action to facilitate the electoral process.

Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Dr. Wek Mamer Kuol told the Cabinet that the current Transitional Constitution links elections to the adoption of a permanent constitution, creating a legal inconsistency with the peace agreement.

The proposed amendment seeks to harmonize the two legal frameworks and pave the way for the conduct of elections in December.

The bill will now be forwarded to the Transitional National Legislature for consideration.
