The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Sudanese Chargé d’affaires in Juba following recent clashes between South Sudanese and Sudanese nationals in Khartoum.

Last week, more than 200 homes, including school and a church were reportedly burnt in Al kadru town – north of Khartoum after the killing of a Sudanese national during a robbery incident.

The fight reportedly ensued after some young South Sudanese allegedly beat up a Sudanese man and robbed him of his phone on March 11.

The man died shortly after the incident – prompting the host community to retaliate against South Sudanese in Al Kadru area.

The government in Juba then called the top Sudanese diplomat, Ambassador Jamal Malik.

This is according to Ambassador Ambrose Thamania, the spokesperson of South Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“We have called the ambassador and then we have discussed the steps that we need to take and we are in coordination with our embassy in Khartoum and our embassy in Khartoum has also taken steps, they consulted the UNHCR to settle these people”, Ambrose Thamania said.

“We also want to assure the Sudanese that are in South Sudan that there would not be any kind of retaliation that can happen to them in South Sudan.”

For his part, the Sudanese Chargé d’affaires, Ambassador in Juba Jamal Malik says the situation in Khartoum now is under control.
