The Inspector General of Police said the government is considering imposing a curfew from 6pm to 6am in Juba to ensure public safety and protection of properties and businesses.

A number of markets in Juba were attacked by angry youth targeting Sudanese-owned shops on Thursday evening in apparent reprisal for the reports of killings against South Sudanese citizens in Sudan’s Al-Jazeera state.

The South Sudanese refugees in Sudan were killed allegedly by elements of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) after retaking Wad Madani city from paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Meanwhile, organized forces positioned at market places and major roads in Juba responded by firing shots in different locations to contain the situation.

In an interview with state-owned television SSBC on Friday, IGP General Abraham Manyuat reiterated that the police is responsible for protection of property and maintaining public order.

He added that the proposed curfew is to ensure properties are protected at night.

“We want to assure you that we will protect all the markets. The police are responsible of protect their lives charge properties, public health and public order,” Manyuat said.

“They have the freedom of movement and to work, and anything they would like to do. We might put an extra measure such as a curfew from 6pm in order to reduce those outlaws who may take advantage of the night.”

“This will also be to protect properties of the people and we advised them to close their shop as early as 5:00 PM.”

The army spokesperson has confirmed the deployment of additional personnel in various residential areas, particularly those most affected by the disturbances.
