Gov. Cleto in New York for UN assembly on women empowerment

Governor of Western Bahr Al Ghazal highlighted South Sudan’s efforts to empower women and end Gender Based Violence in a briefing at the 68th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women on Tuesday.

Sarah Cleto led a South Sudan delegation to New York on 15th of March 2024 to participate in the UN session.

Governor Cleto said her country is on the path to attaining sustainable development goals as it is engaged in projects to uplift women.

The official said the government and partners are implementing projects to empower through the formation GBV and Juvenile court, as well as Special Protection Unit and Mobile Courts.

“We have embarked on several projects towards elevating women from poverty and attainment of the SGDs by 2030,” he said.

“To end violence against women and girls and for survivors to access legal support and protections, the government has established special protection units at police stations and one stop center at state hospitals across the country.”

“To deter GBV crimes the government has established a Juvenile GBV court supplemented by a mobile court.”

The 68th annual Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68) is the UN’s largest annual gathering on gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The event which concludes on Friday, 22nd March is under the priority theme: “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective.”
