The government says there is no money to conduct the gubernatorial election in Lakes state.

There are other reasons why caretaker Governor Matur Chut will continue to manage the affairs of the state, Justice Minister John Luk told the media.

“The election commission which is supposed to hold the elections is not in a position to do so for a number of reasons.

“Up to today, high state committees have not been established in the state.

“The very insecurity for which the elected governor was removed has not yet fully stabilized. It still needs more efforts to see that there is full stability in the state.

Hon. Luk also urged the government to deal with the issue quickly.

“What is important now ….as a way forward is to see that the government provides resources for the National Election Commission so that it can establish itself.”

Caretaker Governor Matur Chut was appointed through a presidential decree earlier this year following the dismissal of the elected governor, Chol Tong Mayay.

However, Governor Chut’s mandated term expired several months ago.

Under the Interim Constitution he could serve only sixty days before an election was called.
