Engineer Anthony Surur shot dead in Juba

A 62-year-old man was shot dead in Juba after leaving his house for a morning exercise on Friday.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on Engineer Anthony Surur Mbolo shortly after he left his house in the Hai Mayo residential area.

Thomas Emilio, a cousin brother to the diseased, said the incident occurred at around 5:00 AM.

The motive for the killing is unknown.

“Every morning he goes for exercise, he leaves his house at Hai Mayo, at around 5 in the morning and he returns home. Today, he left the house early morning, few meters from his house he was shot,” Emilio said.

“According to the police, they found two or three gunshots, on his head and the bullet went out through his mouth and another bullet went to his back and came out from his chest.”

Late Surur was found dead by the police in the earlier hours of Friday, with some money and a rosary in his pocket.

Emilio said his cousin’s brother is a devoted believer and an active member of Saint Theresa Cathedral – a Catholic Church in the Kator residential area.

The victim is survived by four boys and five girls.

When contacted, the police spokesperson Major General Daniel Justin –said the police are investigating the incident.

“Yes, we have the information, but we are yet to have more details. Yes, he has been going to church, and that’s what happened, but the motive behind the killing is still not known,” Gen. Justin told Eye Radio.

“A police case has been filed and we are still investigating to ascertain what time he was killed near his house.”

Anthony Surur was a graduate of Architecture Engineering at the University of Khartoum.

His remains are currently at a Juba mortuary and expected to be flown to his home area of Wau in Western Bahr el Ghazal state.
