The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Jemma Nunu Kumba discussed regional stability with Congolese President, Felix Tshitsekedi.

Nunu who is also the sitting President of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region stated that her mission to DRC is to support the ongoing peace processes mediated by the former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.

She pointed out that the security and humanitarian situation in Eastern DRC has continued to deteriorate, despite a pause in fighting between the M23 rebels and the Congolese army.

The DRC is still facing a resurgence of attacks by armed groups, and rebel forces who have been killing civilians, and burning villages in North Kivu and Ituri.

The Speaker added that the atrocities committed by these armed groups unveiled the death of innocent civilians and the displacement of vulnerable people from their homes and livelihoods.

Nunu welcomes the recent decision of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to examine the acts committed in North Kivu.

“We had a very interactive discussion on deteriorating security situations in Eastern Congo in which many people had been affected by the conflict,” said Hon. Nunu.

“We also sort his views on the ongoing peace process which is facilitated by His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta in trying to bring solutions to the conflict in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo,” she said.

“He [President Tshitsekedi] also shot his views on Luganda’s roadmap, the roadmap which was proposed by His Excellency Joao Lourenco of Angola, and also specific references to the deteriorating bilateral relationship between Rwanda and D.R Congo.”

“The President has expressed concern about this deteriorating situation and called upon the leaders of the region to support the process of the peace and also engage Rwanda.”
