The business community in Uganda and Kenya want the process for membership of South Sudan into the East African Community to be blocked.

The private sector in the two countries had filed a court case against South Sudan in an effort to block it from joining the regional bloc.

“They have suit the secretary-general, and have taken us to the East African Court of Justice,” said Ambassador Dr. Richard Sezibera, Secretary-General of the East African Community.

However, he could not reveal the charges pressed against the leadership.

However, the chairperson of Uganda Traders Association of South Sudan, Patrick Ntege Walusimbi, told Eye Radio last year that the government of South Sudan does not assure a good business environment in the country.

Amb Sezibera said they will discuss with the government the complaints raised against South Sudan.

“The issues raised by the private sector in the East Africa will also be discussed with the Government of South Sudan, and I am sure that through this process of negotiations and discussions, we will be able to find a solution to these and other issues,” he added,

Dr. Sezibera further said negotiations for the admission of South Sudan into the East African Community will start later this year.
