At least 80 people have so far died of cholera in South Sudan, the international medical charity, MSF, has announced.

In May, the Health Ministry declared outbreak of the water-borne disease in Juba. It then spread to some parts of the country.

“The cases all over South Sudan have been accumulative number of 3,338 cases with 80 death, the rate total of 2.4%,” David Medsue, Project Coordinator for cholera intervention of MSF, told Eye Radio.

The data was collected between 23rd April and 12th of July.

Mr. Medsue said the states of Equatoria still have a high number of cholera cases, with over 3,000 recorded.

Only 1 case was reported in Bor. Upper Nile also had 1.

Mr. Medsue said the number of cases reported are from the National Ministry of Health.

Cholera is an infection of the small intestine, caused by drinking water or eating food that has been contaminated. Its main symptoms are watery diarrhea and vomiting.

Health authorities recommend that people should wash their hands regularly with soap or ash.
