The Ministry of Health in Unity State says cholera cases have declined this month compared to previous months, although Rubkona, Guit and Mayom counties continue to report cases.

Speaking to Eye Radio this morning, Jal Puok Nhial said the state has recorded a cumulative 11,182 suspected cholera cases since the beginning of the year.

Jal said no deaths have been reported this month.

However, he said Rubkona remains the most affected area, largely due to the presence of internally displaced people and other vulnerable communities.

“This month, the cholera cases have dropped. Rubkona is the one still having some records, with Guit and Mayom. Otherwise, compared to the previous month, it has dropped a little bit. We have no death cases, but we have some few cases,” he said.

Jal said the Ministry of Health, together with partners including the World Health Organization and UNICEF, has stepped up public awareness on cholera prevention.

The campaign promotes drinking safe water, regular handwashing and avoiding open defecation.

He said vaccination campaigns have also supported the response, with another campaign expected in the coming days.

Jal said the state currently has enough medical supplies to manage cholera cases and has not experienced shortages of medicines.

He urged communities to remain vigilant and report suspected cholera cases to health authorities without delay.

“My message to our community is that they have to remain vigilant and report any cases of cholera on time without any delay. They should follow all the measures like washing hands, not going for open defecation, drinking clean water and reporting any cases that occur in our community,” he appealed.
