The Commissioner of Duk County in Jonglei State is calling for calm after six people were killed and 21 others injured in two days of inter-clan fighting in Duk-Padiet.

Commissioner John Chatim Ruei says the clashes began on Tuesday and continued yesterday following a dispute between members of the Gawaar and Lou Nuer communities.

He says the incident started after people from an area called Pagak arrived in Duk-Padiet.

Ruei says retaliatory clashes followed after one side accused the other of killing one of its members.

The Commissioner says six people were killed and 21 others injured, with the deaths caused by gunfire.

He says those killed were young men in their twenties who were armed.

The clashes also forced some residents, particularly women and children, to flee their homes, according to the Commissioner.

Chatim says dialogue is now underway involving traditional chiefs, community leaders, the government and the army.

He says the talks are aimed at containing the situation and preventing further violence.
