Charles III was crowned king on Saturday at Westminster Abbey in Britain’s biggest ceremonial event in seven decades.

The sumptuous coronation event was administered by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.

The crowd roared “God save the King”, accompanied by clapping and whooping, as the King was crowned in Westminster Abbey. The also congregation sings a hymn throughout the event.

Outside, a gun salute was fired by The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery at the Tower of London, according to the BBC.

Charles succeeded his mother Queen Elizabeth II, who died last September.

At the age of 74 years, he has become the oldest British monarch to wear the 360-year-old St Edward’s Crown on his head at a grand ceremony in London.

The coronation was attended by about 100 heads of state and dignitaries including US first lady Jill Biden. The history of the British monarchy dates back nearly 1,000 years when William the Conqueror was first crowned in 1066.

His second wife Camilla, 75, was also crowned queen during the two-hour ceremony.
