Military Hospital at Geida, Juba.

A member of the Central Equatoria state Legislative Assembly has proposed the relocation of military barracks away from residential areas.

The Deputy Chairperson of SPLM Parliamentary Caucus in state Legislative Assembly says the move would help reduce spillover of army fighting into civilian areas.

Hon Peter Duku Wani described to Eye Radio some of the incidences that made him raise the motion.

“The raising of this motion is prompted by the incident of December the 15th, but besides that, of course, there are some incidents of explosion of ammunitions in the stores,” said Hon Wani.

“And we also think that these barracks were built during the colonial time when Juba was very very small, and the military headquarters, the former one, was very far away at Atlabara – it was empty, Kator was also empty, but now the barracks are right inside the community areas.”

Hon Duku said the current military barracks should be moved 5 kilometers away from Juba.

He said the army areas around Lologo area can be turned into educational facilities:

“For example, in Lulugo there is no school at all and there is also no hospital. The Mia Sitashar area can become a school which can serve a lot. And for the military hospital, if a very good and modern hospital is built for the military after the relocation, it can become a teaching hospital for Juba University itself, and that can serve very well. And then the general military headquarter can also become part of the university.”

Honorable Duku said the motion will be tabled before the state assembly early next month.
