Akon International Airport to be ready in two years – state govt
The construction of Akon International Airport in Gogrial West County of Warrap State will be completed in two years, according to the state government.
The standard airport is being built by Wunkoc Engineering and Modern Contractors – a South Sudanese-owned company.
The construction was previously launched by Vice President Hussein Abdelbagi Akol and First Lady Ayen Mayardit, but it is not clear who is funding the project.
About 120 trucks and dozens of bulldozers are transporting tons of murram to the airport site from Aweil South in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.
Warrap State Governor Manhiem Bol Malek, First Lady Ayen, and state officials, on Saturday, August 26, inspected the ongoing airport construction.
According to a statement from the official Facebook page of Warrap State government, the CEO of the contractor is expecting foreign engineers in two weeks.
“H.E. Governor Manhiem was briefed by the CEO of Wunkoc, Mr. Baak Mayen who is the contractor of Akon International Airport, he said his company is expecting foreign Engineers to come in two weeks’ time and would complete their work in 2 years.”
“In other developments, Governor Manhiem inspects the progress of other developmental projects including Akon Tarmac Road and a boarding school at Atueltong Village of Akon South Payam.’
The statement further said Governor Manhiem applauded the contractor “for the excellent work they have done at Akon International Airport.”
“He calls on the community to own this development, saying that the Airport will improve the economy in their area and that his government will protect the Foreign Engineers to guarantee their safety.”
