El-Meriekh sail to finals after beating Gonzaga 3-0

Football giants El-Meriekh Bentiu have qualified to the South Sudan Cup finals after beating Rumbek’s Gonzaga FC on 4:1 aggregates at Buluk Playground on Wednesday.

In the first leg of the semifinals, El-Meriekh were held to a 1:1 draw by Gonzaga, the champions of Zone A qualifiers.

But in Wednesday’s encounter, El-Meriekh midfielder Chuol Habibo found the back of the net twice in the first half before Chikidi Koang struck in another one to seal the victory.

Gonzaga have been eliminated from the competition that will see the champions pocket 20,000 US dollars and represent South Sudan at regional level and international level.

El-Meriekh Bentiu were first crowned the champions of Bentiu on October 14 2023, after beating Al-Salam 1-0 in a tightly packed Bentiu Independence stadium.

The giants made it to Zone A of the South Sudan Cup, where they also beat Jamus FC Juba 3-1 to sail to the semifinals of the National Cup.

El-Merriekh will face the winners of the second leg of Jamus FC versus Wanding FC on February 22.

Wanding’s chances of qualification are, however, very diminshed after they lose the first leg 3-0.
