Korean peacekeepers expected in Juba
South Korea will send 290 troops to South Sudan later this month as part of the United Nations peace keeping force.
The country’s army told the Korean Herald newspaper that this is the fifth group to be dispatched to South Sudan.
“Every single member has been fully prepared for the mission in South Sudan over the past eight weeks. We will do our best for the reconstruction and the peace of the country,” said Colonel Kim Byung-chun, who led the contingent during a send-off ceremony held on Thursday in the western port city of Incheon.
The service personnel, mostly engineers and medics, plan to carry out a variety of missions, including construction of the infrastructure, according to officials there.
They will also provide humanitarian aid, support social and economic development by opening vocational schools and a research institute for agriculture.
The Korean force will be on an eight-month mission in South Sudan.
