Calm returns to Aneet as attack death toll rises to 12 – Official

Calm returned to Aneet town a day after 12 people were killed in violence on Monday at the border with Warrap state, an official in Abyei Administrative Area has said.

Ajak Deng, Spokesperson of the border region appealed for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Deng said the death toll from the attack on Aneet town has now risen to twelve people including a child and a woman.

The administrative official said fourteen others have been injured and an unspecified number reportedly went missing.

“The situation is calm, we just count the casualties on the side of those who have been attacked on the side of the Aneet but the other side of the attackers we don’t know, on our side of Aneet,12 people have been killed,” he said.

Deng however said calm has returned to the area after the army deployed troops at the border.

“Our message is always we are asking for peace, these communities have been living alongside together and sharing all resources, and we applaud the initiative of the president for sending the troops,” he said.

Hours after the deadly attack in the early hours of Monday, six lawmakers representing Abyei at the national parliament issued a statement calling on the government and UN to intervene in the conflict.

The legislators are appealing for the unconditional cessation of hostilities in the region, and an immediate investigation into the incident to ensure the perpetrators are held to account.

The letter was signed by Deng Alor Kuol, Chabur Goc Alai, Thabith Chol, Margret Vito Akuar, Tereza Chol, and Asha Abbas Akuei.
