Nigerian has sworn in Bola Tinubu as president in the capital Abuja after the 71-year-old won in a disputed election in February 2023.

Tinubu, a former Lagos governor has been credited with helping the state, which also serves as Nigeria’s commercial capital, increase its revenue base.

He takes over from Muhammadu Buhari who is leaving the country with a high inflation rate, record debt levels, and increasing cases of kidnapping.

He will now lead Africa’s largest democracy, as he faces tough economic and security challenges.

“In our administration, women and youth will feature prominently,” he said according to Al Jazeera.

However, his victory is being challenged in court by his two closest opponents who believe the results were manipulated.

According to the BBC, dignitaries from across the continent are at the swearing-in ceremony in the capital, Abuja, reflecting the significance of the event.

The presidents of Ghana and Rwanda were among a number of leaders from across the continent who were present.
