Amadi residents flee hunger

The commissioner of Rokon County, Jubek State, says the area is witnessing an influx of people fleeing hunger in Amadi state.

This morning, Amadi state Information Minister John Obote told Eye that there had been no response from humanitarian agencies since nearly 50 people reportedly starved to death last week.

Officials there attribute the food crisis to poor harvest insecurity and high market prices.

Rokon Commissioner Simon Muzee said those who are fleeing to Rokon are now in dire need of humanitarian assistance.

“Most of them are looking for food,” Mr Muzee confirmed to Eye Radio Wednesday.

The hundreds of the displaced, who are mostly women and children, come from Yepa One, Yepa Two, and Gabat areas.

A fighting between the army and armed opposition groups in 2016 led to displacement of thousands of civilians in the region.

After calm returned, the farming community could not grow crops due to poor rainfall, according to officials.

The Relief and Rehabilitation Commission and aid groups are yet to comment on the matter.
