In Melut County of Upper Nile state two boys have been admitted to a hospital in a critical condition – allegedly as a result of the effects of oil pollution.

Last week, Melut County officials reported that the health conditions of the population living around oil wells is getting worse.

Officials reported cases of birth defects and skin problems.

“The condition now is getting worse, the two boys who are unconscious, were looking after the cows,” Melut County Commissioner, Akuoch Teng explained to Eye Radio.

“And when they were thirsty, they drank the local water from the ground.

“After that, they developed stomach problems…. they are diarrheic and vomiting.

“We are rushing in a desperate situation now.”

Mr. Akuoch also said the oil exploration has caused a lot of damage to the environment due to poor management of the oil waste generated during oil extraction.

He appealed to the government and oil companies to improve health situation of the people residing near the oil fields, and help shift the communities to the safer locations.
