World Vision: concerns over severe rising humanitarian needs

Author : | Published: Tuesday, July 26, 2016

An international humanitarian agency has expressed concerns over rising needs of the people of South Sudan, following the recent clashes in Juba.

The World Vision says unless humanitarian support is increased, the suffering of the people will worsen.
It says some parts of the country were already facing food shortages and malnutrition with a risk of famine, before the recent fighting in Juba.
World Vision’s National Director Perry Mansfield, says the recent fighting in Juba has further worsened the situation.
“As we know, before the events of two weeks ago, the country was already in a very difficult situation. If you look at the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, the IPC, it’s indicating about 4.8 million people, roughly a third of South Sudan’s population, and acute levels of hunger and malnutrition.
“That’s an increase of over a million from the previous report and about 40% increase in the number of children that are being treated for severe malnutrition.
“Then the events of the week before just made the situation even more difficult.
Mr. Perry says more people are becoming vulnerable although majority of the displaced in Juba have returned to their homes.
He says additional support is needed from all stakeholders for humanitarian efforts.
