The warring parties in South Sudan agree on the cessation of hostilities

The warring parties in South Sudan have signed agreements on a cessation of hostilities and the question of the detainees in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

The delegations from the Government of South Sudan and the SPLM-SPLA in opposition signed two Agreements on Cessation of Hostilities and Question of Detainees, which came into force two hours after the signing.

These are the main points of the Agreement:

1. All fighting to stop within 24 hours of the signing.
2. South Sudan government is to agree to release eleven officials close to the former Vice President Riek Machar.
3. Ugandan troops fighting alongside President Kiir’s forces to be withdrawn
   Open up corridors to allow for humanitarian aid.
4. Verification and monitoring mechanisms to be put in place to make sure the ceasefire is being upheld.
