UPDF to leave S Sudan next week

The Uganda Peoples Defense Force says it will leave South Sudan this week.

The force reentered South Sudan following the recent clashes that broke out between the SPLA and the opposition forces in Juba.

They were deployed to repatriate Ugandan nationals caught up in the fighting.

UPDF Army Commander Gen Katumba Wamala says the operation is limited to few days, to avoid ‘misinterpretation’ of the presence of the Ugandan forces in the country.

“We are not involved in the conflict; our mission is to rescue Ugandans and whoever needs to be rescued. We are not fighting anybody,” the Observer quoted Gen Wamala.

“The operation is going to be limited to a number of days because we do not want people to misinterpret our presence there.”

The UPDF Spokesperson, Paddy Ankunda earlier confirmed that thousands of Ugandans had been taken back their country.

However, he said they were yet to receive orders to withdraw from South Sudan.
