UNMISS destroys firearms seized from IDPs

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan has destroyed 15 fire arms that it collected from the people who ran to UNMISS when the crisis erupted in December last year.

The weapons include AK-47, pistols and a variety of local arms and ammunitions.

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, Ellen Margarethe said other weapons will be destroyed in Malakal, Bentiu, Wau and Bor.

“We hope that the destruction of all confiscated weapons and ammunitions in the mission custody will help foster an environment that is conducive to silencing the guns and the restoration of peace to the World’s youngest nation- state,” said Ms Margarethe.

She urges the political leaders of South Sudan to expedite negotiations on the conclusion of sustainable peace agreement.
