The United Nations Mission in South Sudan has denied media reports that it is moving 10,000 Internally Displaced Persons from Thong Piny camp to a new location in Juba.

UNMISS spokesperson Ariane Quentier told Eye Radio that the mission still has no plans to relocate the IDPs.

Ms. Quentier said the IDPs will remain under the protection of UNMISS in Tong Piny and UN House in Juba until further notice.

“There is no information that it is happening,” she said.

There are 46,000 IDPs in Juba – 26,000 in Thong Piny and 20,000 in UN House, according to UNMISS.

“When the time comes, people will move when it is time to move safely back to their homes.

Thousands of civilians sought refuge at UN bases in Juba when fighting broke out between government forces and forces loyal to Dr. Riek Machar on the 15th of December.

Last month, the Inspector General of Police, Pieng Deng, told Eye Radio that the police service will collaborate with UN police to provide patrols within residential areas in Juba in a bid to convince IDPs to return home.
