Unity State

The Unity State Council of Ministers says the state should change its name.

They want Unity State to be renamed Western Upper Nile.

The decision was made at a meeting with the Deputy Governor Mabeeck Lang De’bielkuich today.

Other names considered were Liech State, Bentiu State and Sud State.

The minister of labor and public service, Benjamin Majack Daw says the name Unity State dates from when the Khartoum government was in power.

“We inherited this name called Unity,” said Hon. Daw “when Bentiu was promoted to be a province under Unity province. This was under the regime of former president Jafar Numeiri.”

“And it was intended to try to curve this district after the northern district after the discovery of oil. The name Unity was put attract Unity within Sudan.”

However, the State legislative assembly will have to vote on the name change before it can be officially adopted.

Only then could the name Western Upper Nile state be fully endorsed by the State Council of Ministers.
