The Undersecretary in the Ministry of Transport has encouraged South Sudanese to invest in river transport, describing it as a lucrative business opportunity with strong potential for growth.

Speaking on Eye Radio’s Dawn Show, Paul Dhel Gum urged local businessmen to take advantage of the sector before it is dominated by foreign investors.

“I encourage South Sudanese, especially the businessmen with money, to invest in river transport. In investment you need to be a pioneer. You don’t have to wake up later and complain that your business has been taken by foreigners. There is need to invest in water transport,” he said.

Gum said those who invest early in emerging industries such as water transport are more likely to earn more profits.

“If you invest in water transport, you will never regret it. You can start a business and make money. You can move goods from Juba to Malakal.”

He said the vast stretch of the River Nile and its tributaries across South Sudan can be used to move goods to different parts of the country.

Gum said plans to upgrade Malakal Airport to an international standard will boost trade, adding that cargo planes from places like Dubai could land in Malakal and goods transported to other areas through the river.

“When Malakal Airport becomes an international airport, goods can be brought from Dubai to the airport and moved from Malakal port using water transport to other places,” he added.

He said river transport is currently affected by insecurity and siltation in some sections of the Nile, but added that the challenges will be addressed through improved security and river clearance.
